The Calanca Biennale was born from a script at the beginning of 2017: “A vertical valley of stones meets other horizontal villages of sand”.

This sentence sums up the meaning and aims of the Calanca Biennale. A vertical valley of stones presupposes that it is neither fertilized with pesticides nor industrially deforested. Calanca was a poor emigration land in the last century, today it is a precious little green lung for the planet.

The people of Calanca got to know the world during the years of poverty, now the world is getting to know Calanca.

The Calanca Biennale is a visual arts event that aims to highlight a special feature of the valley in each edition:

• In 2019, the focus was on altitude meters.
• In 2021, the year of the pandemic, when we were unable to meet, we issued an SOS call.
• In 2023 The hidden colors of the moon
