Tradition HAS ITS PLACE

Our family has been quarrying gneiss in the Calanca Valley since 1920. Our company is currently managed by the third generation. The entire production was moved to Arvigo in 1960 in order to further process the raw material quarried in our own quarry in the modern workshop.

SAFETY FIRST

In order to detect changes in the terrain at an early stage, we have been working with a sensor system for many years and with a geologist since 2000. It is our responsibility to ensure that we always have all the facts on the table as a basis for decision-making, both for our daily work and for delicate blasting operations.

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER

That is why we promote cooperation with the authorities, are active members of the Natural Stone Association as well as Pro Naturstein, and give priority to local companies when choosing our suppliers.

EXCHANGE BRINGS NEW IDEAS

Since August 2020, we have installed a radar from the Lugano University of Applied Sciences that records movements in the quarry. The device provides us with additional measured values that can also be used by students for research purposes.

SUSTAINABILITY

WE INFORM

If we want to make a sustainable change, we have to start at the roots. We offer quarry tours for groups or school classes to tell them more about the fascinating treasures of nature and about our Calanca Valley.

WE STAND AGAINST EXPLOITATION

Together, we can get the ball rolling. That’s why we recommend all interested parties to consciously choose a product from a known origin. This is the only way to rule out poor working conditions or child labor during production.

ECOBALANCE

A natural stone product that is allowed to keep its place for the long term can compete very well with wood, concrete and glass in terms of its eco-balance, because no thermal processes are required in its manufacture. Transport consumes the most energy – we counteract this with good logistical planning.

DURABILITY

Local stone is a sustainable building material. Careful selection pays off because the material is durable and extremely weather-resistant. In addition, the domestic market is strengthened and environmentally damaging transport routes are minimized.

RegionaliTY

LOCAL SPECIALTY

The Calanca Valley is a side valley of the Mesolcina and is located in the Italian-speaking area of the Canton of Grisons. The five municipalities of Castaneda, Sta. Maria i. C.. , Buseno, Calanca, and Rossa count about 800 inhabitants. Besides the unique natural stone, cured meat products such as prosciutto and carne secca are among the valley’s specialties.

PRESERVATION OF LOCAL TRADITION

We are producing a cultural asset, because our quarry is not only a place that preserves the geological history of a region, but today it is also a reference point for cultural activities in the area.

We support recurring activities such as the Demenga Festival, the Calanca Biennale and many other events. So, in the quarry of Arvigo, art, science, history and technology meet.

WITNESSING

Calanca Gneiss was lifted up with the Alps over 65 million years ago and is a witness to history. In regional buildings such as the viaducts of the Rhaetian Railway, our natural stone plays a supporting role, and restorations in elaborate stonemasonry ensure that it stays that way.

PARCO VAL CALANCA

The Parco Val Calanca is a project to bring people closer to the beauty of the Calanca Valley and to inspire them with cultural and nature projects of the region. For the smallest nature park in Switzerland to be realized, a long preparatory phase is needed. Our quarry is located in the middle of the park area. We support the project with our know-how, because together we want to promote the awareness for the treasures of our village, the nature and for the products of our region.
